Find driver license number by SSN a man uses a blue magnifying glass to confirm that is possible while examining the front of a social security card (government issued identification number) and looking toward a driver’s license above a red car in front of him to the left and thinking about how to do a DMV lookup.

There are many instances where a driver’s license number is required, and any individual who has misplaced their ID card may wonder if it’s possible to find a driver’s license number by SSN or some other method.

The most direct answer is that it is possible to find a license number using a social security number, but only through official methods.

Rather than entrusting sensitive information such as SSN, use the DMV lookup method outlined in this article for secure license number retrieval.

The DMV lookup method is both safe and efficient.

How To Find a Drivers License Number

Any person who has a driver’s license also has a driver’s license number, and the license number is displayed on the front of a driver’s ID card.

On most IDs, the license number is listed above the name and address and denoted with the letters DLN. Most DLNs range between six and twelve characters (alpha and numeric), but there are some exceptions, such as Utah which can have as few as four numeric characters, or New Jersey which can have as many as fifteen characters.1

Additionally, several states including Arkansas, Kansas, and Montana may (but don’t always) use an individual’s nine-digit SSN for the driver’s license number. In this case, it’s easy to find driver’s license numbers by SSN because they are one and the same.

How To Find a Driver License Number by SSN (All 50 States)

Social security numbers are generally considered the most confidential of personally identifying information. Thus, SSNs are used for investigative purposes, to conduct background investigations, and even to trace a person.

So can an SSN be used to find a driver’s license number?

In some cases, the driver’s license number is the same as the social security number (as explained above), and in these instances, it’s extremely simple to find the driver’s license number by SSN. However, most situations won’t be quite this straightforward.

When seeking to find a driver’s license number by SSN, it is ill-advised to search online, as fraudulent websites may use an individual’s SSN for identity theft purposes. The only safe way to find a driver’s license number using an SSN is by going through a government agency, such as a state DMV or state licensing center.2

Use the table below to find the contact information for the DMV, or corresponding government agency, in each state.

Use the following DMV lookup method to find the driver’s license number by SSN:

Step 1: Identify the state in which the license ID was originally issued and locate it in the table.

For example, if the license was issued in Vermont, find the corresponding contact information on the table.

Step 2: Call the motor vehicle division for the state of issuance.

In Vermont, the number for the DMV is (888) 998-3766.

Step 3: Explain to the DMV that the license ID has been misplaced and the driver’s license number is not available.

Because the DLN is unknown it is unlikely that an individual can successfully apply for a new license online or by mail as most forms require the DLN.

The DMV will likely request that the individual come to the DMV in person, with social security card and picture ID in hand.3

Step 4: Visit the DMV with SSN and picture ID to obtain a duplicate license and acquire the driver’s license number (or follow additional instructions from the DMV).

For example, if a driver’s license was issued in the state of Alaska, follow these steps to obtain the DLN and a new License ID.

Step 1: Click on the link above to navigate to the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles.52

Alaska is one of the states that allows users to input SSN online instead of the DLN to request a replacement license. Many other states will require an individual to visit the DMV in person.

Step 2: Click on the option for “Replacement ID/Driver’s License.”

Step 3: Fill in the information at the bottom of the page to “Establish Your Identity.”

Click the box next to “I do not know my driver’s license or ID card number” to input SSN instead.

Step 4: Click “Submit” at the bottom of the form to proceed.

Step 5: Follow website instructions to complete the application for a replacement ID.

Government sites may require users to set up or sign in to an account before releasing sensitive information. Users should be able to acquire the DLN during the process of applying for a duplicate ID.

How To Find Driver’s License Number Without Card

The DMV lookup method outlined above is the most reliable way to find a driver’s license number without an ID. However, there are other ways to find a DLN besides going through the DMV. An individual may find their DLN by:2, 3, 4

  • Locating an old driver’s license
  • Finding a picture of the driver’s license stored on a phone or computer
  • Contacting the car insurance company
  • Exploring car registration and insurance documents
  • Looking at employment documents or contacting an employer for a stored copy of the ID

Frequently Asked Questions About How To Find Driver License Number by SSN

Can I Find My Driver’s License Without a Card?

It is fairly simple to look at a Driver’s ID and find the driver’s license number (DLN), but what can be done if the Driver’s ID has been misplaced or stolen? There are various alternatives an individual may turn to, including:2,3

  • Looking through filed documents such as
    • Insurance information
    • Registration information
    • Employment information
  • Contact the current car insurance company and request DLN
  • Contact past or current employer and request DLN
  • Use the DMV lookup method outlined in this article

Although online solutions are often faster and simpler, there may not always be a quick and easy way to find a driver’s license number. Because many states do not allow online DLN retrieval, the DMV lookup method outlined in this article is the most universal way to find a driver’s license number by SSN.

Where Do I Do a DMV Lookup?

To find a state DMV, google the state name + DMV. Alternatively, follow the links in the above tables to access each state’s designated motor vehicle and licensing department (or contact them directly). From there, online resources can be accessed and local DMVs can be located.

Can Someone Get My DL Number Without Permission?

It is not possible to obtain a driver’s license number online without proof of identity (date of birth, social security number, picture ID), etc. If an individual has obtained all of these personal identifiers, it would be possible, in theory, for them to get another person’s DLN. However, most states require DLN requests to be made in person for further identity verification. This provides an extra layer of security.

Can I Find Driver License Number By SSN for Free?

Most states charge a small fee anytime a user needs to replace a Driver’s License. However, by going to the DMV in person, you may be able to garner the number using your SSN for free.

Can I Find Drivers License Number With Social Security Number? (Is There a Method for How To Find Driver License Number With Social Security?)

At least 29 states use the social security number to track down Driver’s License numbers, so it is possible to find your in this way, using the DMV lookup method outline above.

Can I Search Driver License Number With SSN?

Typically, you can’t search for your license number using your SSN, unless you follow the method for the DMV lookup.
