Whether it’s to prepare for a job interview or for personal reasons, when conducting a background check, Oklahoma provides a host of public records to search. This is especially important for people who need to know “what appears on a background check” and “what is included in a criminal record.”
There are generally two options for running an Oklahoma background check, whether it involves employment history, criminal history, or gaining approval for gun ownership or a concealed carry license:
Like a background check in California, or indeed, most other states, to run a manual search users simply need time as well as the knowledge about how to do an Oklahoma background check online, using various official platforms and databases.
This guide outlines a number of ways to get a background check in Oklahoma and the methods involved for getting background check information from various state agencies.
There are a few different ways to get an Oklahoma background check. The quickest and often the cheapest is to get a background check through a background check service that offers a free trial.
For users who plan to DIY and use various public records to perform the background check without the help of a background check service, they’ll need to know where the information is stored.
Be aware, it may be necessary to contact a few different state agencies to obtain records.
For non-criminal public records, the first place to check is the local county clerk. The local county clerk is in charge of most public records that don’t involve the courts. This includes the following records in most cases:
Obtaining information through the local county clerk is fairly easy in most cases but will vary slightly from county to county depending on a few different factors. In general, most county clerks will not have an online database, although this is certainly a possibility. Instead, the best way to request records in many cases is to contact the county clerk directly who can help individuals get the documents they need and guide them through the process.
Detailed steps are provided below.
Step 1: Access the County Clerk’s Website
The first step is to find the website of the local county clerk. This is important for two reasons. First, it will let individuals know if there is a searchable online database available, which is by far the easiest and quickest way to get the records being sought. Second, the website will have contact information for the county clerk at the very least, which is essential for the next step.
Step 2: Locate Information About Records Requests
Assuming there is no online database the website will often have specific instructions on how to request records and will even include a record request form in many cases. If there is a record request form, simply download and fill out the form and then follow the website’s instructions on how to submit the form, usually by email or sending the form to the clerk’s office.
Step 3: Contact the Clerk Directly
If all else fails and there is no online database, and no information about records requests, then simply contacting the clerk will be the best thing to do. Either calling the clerk or emailing them about records requests will both work fine, and they will be able to guide individuals through their unique process and explain what records are available and which are not.
For example, to request records from the Kingfisher County clerk, individuals can access the county clerk’s page1 on the Kingfisher county official website. Then, individuals can use the land records search2 if they are searching for land records, or they can use the provided phone number to contact the office directly.
Individuals who are searching for criminal history information from the state of Oklahoma will have a few different options to complete their search. Although the county clerk will have some public records, only the county court clerk will have access to court records.
Luckily, both state and county-level court records for the state of Oklahoma are available online, making the process of getting information for an Oklahoma background check as easy as possible.
Detailed steps to search Oklahoma court records are provided below.
Step 1: Access the OSCN Website.
The first step in the process will be to access the website for the Oklahoma State Courts Network.3 This page will have plenty of information on the state court system and will also have several pages regarding what kind of records are held and how to find them.
Step 2: Access the Docket Search
On the website’s homepage select the “Case Search,”4 link to be taken to the page where the actual search will be performed.
Step 3: Perform Search
Once here, it is as simple as filling in the provided form and performing the search. It’s always recommended to enter as much information as possible to yield the best results but even just the name of an individual can be used to perform the search.
If all else fails, individuals can always contact the county court clerk using the list below for more information.
Getting an official criminal background check from the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation is extremely easy, and can be done completely online.
Step 1: Access the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation website
The first step is to access the website of OSBI.5 The OSBI is in charge of all official criminal history information requests for the state.
Step 2: Access the Criminal History Information Page
From the website’s homepage simply access the page for criminal history information by selecting “criminal history,”6 from the “services,” drop-down menu.
Step 3: Make a Criminal History Request Online or Using the Form
Once on the criminal history page, simply follow the provided steps to make a formal request. Requests can be done online using the Online Criminal History Request Portal7 or by filling out the criminal history request form8 and mailing it to the address provided on the website.
In some cases, it may be worthwhile to also request records from the local Sheriff’s Department. The process to do so is very similar to requesting information from the county clerk. Simply access the Sheriff’s Department’s website from the list below and navigate to the page about records requests. From there fill out the provided form, or if no form or information is available, simply contact the Sheriff’s office and enquire about how to make a records request.
Looking up sex offender and inmate information in the state can be done easily using online databases that can be searched instantly
To perform an inmate search for the state of Oklahoma, simply log on to the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Offender Lookup204 and perform a search using the name or inmate number of an individual. Information regarding their sentencing and current location will be available instantly.
Searching for sex offender information is also extremely easy. To do so, access the website for the Oklahoma Sex Offender Registry,205 and perform a search using the name of an individual or by providing a zip-code or address. Providing an address or zip code will show all registered sex offenders in that geographic area.

There are federal laws regarding child care background check208 requirements. In addition to the federal laws, the state of Oklahoma also has additional checks which are performed by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.20
Certain jobs require DOT records, usually if the job requires the operation of heavy machinery. A DOT record can easily be obtained through the Department of Public Safety.209
Depending on the nature of the volunteer work, there may be specific background check requirements. For example, child care volunteers are subject to the same background checks as employees. These checks are usually performed by the OSBI.6
In Oklahoma, only licensed firearms dealers are required to run a background check prior to making a sale. This check is performed by the FBI and only takes a few minutes to complete. Private sellers are not required to perform background checks in the state.
Oklahoma has several laws regarding background checks, none of which are out of the ordinary compared to the rest of the country. These include laws regarding social media checks and more:
A typical background check in Oklahoma should usually take a week at most. Fingerprint background checks may take up to two weeks to complete.

There are many different ways to get background check information in Oklahoma, many of which can be done online. Although getting an official background check in Oklahoma will cost at least $15, certain information can be had for much cheaper.
